Till the 20th of July, Indian Medical Department administered over 40 crore vaccine doses against the Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19.)

The vaccination drive which started from the 16th of January in India, administered 40,03,50,489 doses of the COVID-19 vaccines. Of the total, 8.30 crore individuals (16.60 crore doses) received both the doses, whereas close to 26 crore people received a single dose. In the population of 133 crore people, only 6.1 % are fully vaccinated against the deadly Wuhan virus.

With the continuation of the vaccine drives, the Central Government and the government of states and union territories (UTs) are ramping up procurement of vaccines from manufacturers. According to sources, the GoI is aiming to vaccinate 50 % of the population by December 2021 and supply the vaccines promptly. In the next six months, the Central Government would also procure 66 crore doses of the two India made COVID-19 vaccines.

So far, the GoI has provided 42,15,43,730 vaccine doses to states and UTs against the Novel Coronavirus. The major reason to vaccinate the huge population soon is due to the fear of the third wave of the Wuhan virus, which is expected to be more dangerous, especially for the youth and the children.

Meanwhile, currently, India has four vaccines available. Two of them are made in India vaccines and the remaining two are foreign vaccines. The two India made vaccines are the Serum Institute of India (SII) manufactured Covishield and the Bharat Biotech International Private Limited manufactured COVAXIN. Among the foreign vaccines, one is the Russian vaccine Sputnik V, manufactured by Dr. Reddy’s Laboratory, Hyderabad, and the second one is the Moderna vaccine manufactured by Pfizer (USA,) which is only on import basis.
